What is a subeditor? What experience should you look for?
Subs' are the Rolls Royce mechanics of corporate copywriting. Not only are they able to identify quickly what is wrong with a text, but the best of them can also fix it with speed and style.
What experience should you look for?
A sub with experience of national newspapers and consumer magazines will be used to fixing even the slackest copy to incredibly tight deadlines. The best subeditors come closest to being the corporate all rounder - capable of generating genuinely inspiring headlines as well as tightening up corporate gobbledegook.
But as with all writing roles, be warned - there are many who call themselves subeditor without justification. Always look for a lengthy stint at a well-known consumer title (ideally a national newspaper) or market-leading trade publication. Once you've found a good sub, never, ever, let them go. |
